Surrey Commuters Face Monday Delays With Pattullo Bridge Closure

Swift News

Surrey commuters are warned to expect major delays on Monday morning (Feb. 9) as drivers cope with the week-long closure of the Pattullo Bridge.  The Pattullo and Stal̕əw̓asəm bridges are both closed this week as work continues on road connections to the new Stal̕əw̓asəm, which will ultimately replace the venerable Pattullo. The closure began at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6 and is expected to last until at least this Friday, depending upon weather.  Motorists can use Port Mann or Alex Fraser bridges for their commutes instead, meaning more traffic on both. DriveBC is warning drivers to expect an extra 30 minutes of travel time.

N19 NightBus trips will be rerouted between New Westminster and Scott Road stations, with extra buses in service. SkyTrain service on the Expo and Millennium lines will start one hour earlier on Sunday, Feb. 8.  The Pattullo Bridge sidewalk will remain open for pedestrians and cyclists, and emergency vehicle access will be maintained.  “Once this work is complete, two northbound lanes and one southbound lane will be open on the Stal̕əw̓asəm Bridge. One southbound lane will remain open on the Pattullo Bridge,” says a post on pattullobridgereplacement.ca.  For a week, full closure of bridges old and new is required for crews to work around the clock to complete connections to roadways on both sides of the new span, high above Fraser River, with paving, utilities and other work.  By late February all four lanes are due open on the new bridge, followed by the complete deconstruction of the old Pattullo over the next two years.  On the Surrey side, the new Highway 17 off-ramp, multi-use paths and sidewalks will be completed in mid-2026, as the work can’t be done until Pattullo Bridge has been partially removed.
